need an opinion on what may be the best cross bow purchase, Im 60 + years old and am woried about cocking the device, and I want a good quality bow any help I know they are HIGH, but I have a TenPoint Phantom that is nothing short of amazing.......can easily shoot 3" groups at 50yds and has a super easy crank cocking device......hold your breathe tho when u look at price......... They have a less expensive line called Wicked Ridge I believe but they have less warranty period on them...... www.wickedridgecrossbows.com/The Turbo XLT II is about half what the Phantom runs and is a great bow also..... www.tenpointcrossbows.com/shop/shopexd.asp?id=389

Strike zone 350 is light, extremely easy to cock, quiet, super trigger, extremely accurate. What more can I say. Cost, I think is appx $600. Don't confuse this with the SZ 380 which has had so much bad press. However, I love my SZ 380.

I decided on the 350 due to the cost. I gave $680 for the "kit" including a mid level upgrade on the optics. I didn't have great results with the factory bolts. As I understand it they are GT Laser IIs. I bought bare shafts, indexed the spine, and fletched them with Blazers and now it shoots GREAT. First bow of any kind that I've ever even seen that can shoot a fixed blade broadhead just as well as a field point, and with the same POI.

Got an Equinox very accurate and easy to maintain without a bow press you can change the string with ease The only down fall is the width of the recurve you need to be aware of your surroundings several guys got caught up being focused on a deer and had the limb next to a tree limb and shot the xbow string flew off and the bow bounced back and hit them. This can happen if the limb hits the tree other then that the xbows that that were used hitting the tree limbs caused no damage to the xbow they restrung the bow and it shot excellent again I like mine alot

Nothing against other crossbows but I prefer Scorpyd to anything else available. Best balanced, accurate as any other, faster than most, and built with top limbs and components.

I would recommend 10 point, I have had the same one for 10 years and have taken it to there factory in Ohio for a string and cable replacement twice. They didn't charge me anything except the parts. I am from Ohio and I always try to buy American made products, and when I can support my own state such as Ten Point in Suffix Oh that's even better.

I don't really have a dog in this hunt but I got to meet the guys from 10 Point a few years back and have to say they seemed to be a pretty good bunch. They were at the "goose" (Gander Mtn) and one customer had some minor gripes and didn't have the time to go back to his house and bring his X-bow back so they offered to stop by his house on the way back home to check it out. Said that if they couldn't fix it there they would give him one of their demos. I thought that was pretty outfreakingstanding CS.

Do to health issues my brother and I have used ten point with accurdraw for more than ten years now. We have both shot a lot of deer with them. Never had any problems either. Had to restring both of them last year. Nothing wrong just figured it was about time.

So much depends on the hunter: amount willing/able to spend, physical limitations, amount of time/energy/expense willing/able to invest, personal feelings about how far to be willing to shoot(remember, true hi energy bows require special tgts and possibly very expensive arrows), personal hunting situations(how thick the hunting area is), and so on. If I only hunted open fields and money were no factor, I'd likely own a Scorpyd 165 or a TAC 15. However, I hunt a mixture and elect to shoot a SZ 380 with an excellent rifle scope(30mm 1.5x4.5) with arrows set up for long range and an Optimizer. I practice to 100 yds: this makes shorter shots easier.

I am also 60 years old and have been using a Barnett crossbow for about 15 years. This year I switched to an Excaliber Axiom (Recurve style). It is a very accurate crossbow and I killed a nice doe with it the first day I took it into the woods. You can pick one up as a kit with Scope, Arrows(Bolts), quiver, and cocking string for right around $500.00........I am very happy with it.

I have a TenPoint Elite with Accu-draw. Groups as good as my slug gun to 60 yards(far as I have shot). With the Accu-draw a 10 year old could shoot this bow. Never any trouble. I have had about five years and will replace strings(bow and Accu-draw) this year.

Most modern crossbows are very satisfying to their owners: it's only when a person shoots a variety of crossbows that the differences appear. I just love my Parker #175 Saf Mag(7 years old) until I shoot my SZ 380 , then I just like my Saf Mag. I have a close friend with a new #225 Excalibur, who loved it. He came over, we shot both 380 and Excalibur, he shot mine to 100 yds(Lazer 3 Pros, 170g point/Al nocks, Blazers, Optimizer, WCE 1.5x4.5), and consistently hit the black dots at 90 yds. The Excalibur(which he had previously "loved" ) is being sold - he has >$1,000 in it. He liked the extreme quietness, ease of cocking, balance, size, speed, TRIGGER, of the SZ. In this case, to him, the SZ was much more desirable. If I shot a Ventalator, Hickory Ridge, CamX, who knows .... Unless a person has money to spend freely, likes his crossbow very much(as my friend did, and as I do), it might just be good to not shoot any other crossbow that the one(s) we have. :-)

Just a heads up to the xbow folks..... Horton has sold out to Ten Point, and TP has made it clear they will not be honoring any Horton warranties. So if a dealer (ebay or where ever) offers you a great deal with no worries and claims you will be taken care of,,,,YOU WONT BE! Go to Ten Points web site for what they will offer for a limited time.
Horton made a great product too, for a reasonable price.

If you're on a budget, check out Wicked Ridge. It's a sub of Ten Point. GREAT bang for your buck. WyvernCreations will give you a great deal on them.
It's sort of like a Stevens 200 action from Savage. You get all the function with a little less refinement.

mission 320 made by Matthews deserves a look too. Need a price range; crossbows start at around $400 and go up.

After 30+ years of crossbow shooting! I've found 1 that just seems "perfect" to me. Though I've really liked certain xbows (SZ 380 for example) until I shot the Matrix 380, I never was so taken. Weight below 6# w/o accessories, accuracy and repeatability unequaled previously, factory arrows(18" Diablo) with 100,125,150g points all 1" or better gps @60 yds and 2" at 90 in appx 5 mph variable wind. This loaned xbow sold me. I'll buy either a M380 or less Ikely a M405. The smaller size for an Excalibur, light weight, repeatability, accuracy, simplicity - replace own strings/no timing issues, reputation all come together to make this the perfect xbow, for me. 2 different cocking crank systems are available for those who need assistance cocking. I do not like their scopes personally because of optics but tracking is great. Only disadvantage is low light optical ability: not necessarily a deal breaker for some: is for me. Through Wyvern Creations, this bow can be bought bare bow or various accessories. Excalibur is "proud $" of the M 380 & 405, less so for the M 330 & 355. This isn't the "perfect" bow for everyone but is for me.

Wow SW, I never thought I would have heard you be so excited about another x-bow after the good luck with your SZ's. Glad to know the Matrix has your approval. I have yet to shoot one but have shot an Equinox, and liked it. I bought a Ten Point because of all the positives I heard about them and got a great deal. I am very satisfied with it, but would like to shoot something with more speed, meaning range. Looking forward to hearing of you really ringing it out in the future if/when you pull the trigger on one. I have followed your posts and greatly respect what you have to say and your opinion on different things. Now that I got my feet wet with a x-bow, I think I will check out a Matrix for the future. Thanks.

Deadeer, I now have well over 250 shots thru the M 380 with arrows ranging from 350g to 560g. Even at 80 yds the factory supplied Diablo 18" arrows with 100g field points are as accurate as the custom built 530 and 560g arrows. If I could afford 2, I'd get a 355&405; however, I'll likely get only the M 380. The M 380 with the higher level Vortex scope(2-8/32mm), or the Zeiss 2x8, or the Zeiss Aimpoint thing on an Optimizer, shooting the Diablo arrows/125/150 expandibles, Trigger Tech 1or 2 stage Matrix trigger, Boo string, new Excalibur tip quieteners with field quiver in pack(not on bow) would be an ideal set-up for me, maybe for anyone. I've shot it to 90 yds so far: still 2" GPS. I can get 3" with SZ 380 but it has to be resighted periodically: not so with Matrix - always the same whether cold , hot, weeks gone by, etc. There's a difference in group size and repeatability. Excalibur is very repeatable.

How is the sound of the Matrix? I have read opinions from quiet to the crack of a 22 long for comparison! That's a big difference. More than enough pics of dead animals around to say they are quiet enough. I have also read some guys wear ear plugs when shooting their recurves, I can't imagine they are that loud. The Equinox I shot was not like that, but it did have the string bumpers. Those made a huge difference on my Ten Point Titan Extreme.

I have home made rubber string strips on the Matrix. I understand the factory ones significantly quieten the Matrix. It is nothing like the Equinox: I've compared. They are louder than most quiet compounds. However, not a problem. A friend of mine, who owns only an Equinox, stated that he thought the Matrix was significantly quieter than his Equinox. I expect with the Boo string/silencers on the string and the Excalibur string bumpers on the limbs plus the supplied string stops(on M 380 & M 405 , not 330 & 355) and shooting 375g arrow or up(I expect to shoot Diablo + 150g expandible = 400-402g) will yield a fairly quiet xbow.
