I inlet the Stockade stock on Monday. I made the barrel band and tube for the ram rod today. Screwed up three before I got it right. Tomorrow, I will install the Knight 900023 breech plug and Knight 900015 Red hot musket nipple. This first rifle will be done the way Richard Franklin shows except with a Savage PTA action. Hope to be done before the afternoon tomorrow. Nat

I will finish the Smokeless Muzzle loader based on a Savage PTA, Rock Creek 450/458, 1:20 7R barrel, Rayhill stock. Decided to use a Knight 900023 breech plug with a Knight Red hot musket nipple just like Richard Franklin uses. I will post some pictures when I get it together. Nat

Look foreward to seeing how that one unfolds for you. Sounds real nice.

I'm glad I stumbled in to this forum I have been using the savage ML2 for fifteen years now with sabots I always wanted to go sabot less but could not get anyone to build me a barrel , I love the 300 grn .458 socom and the gov .458 #4500 hp bullets I've hunted with them and have taken about 100 white tails out to 278yds but I live in Florinda and during hot months its impossible to group shots. I want to use my savage breach plug receiver and put a barrel on that is riffled for the .458 diabullet but here is the kicker I would like the first 1/2 " of the barrels muzzle end inside to be smooth to bullet diameter before the crown allowing for perfect bullet alignment and ease of field loading followup shots or a shot at multiple animals. I can get off three shots in about the time it takes most people to work a bolt gun. I have taken a 20" wide buck and followed up with a doe , and a second doe on the run within about a min and 40 sec. completely filling all my tags in first 25 min of my hunt . Could anyone tell me who might be able to do such a barrel for me . Thank you Woodstuff.

The best way to shoot a .458 bullet sabotless is to buy a .450/.458 barrel through Arrowhead Sporting Goods (top of the page in yellow). They should be available either in Pacnor or McGowen. Order it with the drop and have an adjustable fullform die made by Swinglock from this drop. The die will fit in any typical loading press. The bullets will then be pre-rifled to load directly on top of the powder with no wads. The rifling is best left all the way to the crown to index the bullet grooves to the barrel lands. Luke at Arrowhead can help you with all of the particulars too.

Welcome to Woodstuff! Dittos " " to fishhawk! His advice is zactly to the point and accurate.
Yeah with speed loading I practiced a lot from the beginning with good old "holy black"! I could get off 3 shots in just under a minute using speed loaders and the old "belted" bullets. Never got 3 at one herd but got 2 many a time.
Hope you enjoy SML cause this is the right place to learn and always get a little better.

Mcgowen barrels can be shot sabotless without sizing ... 250 tez barnes,275 parker mh,300mh....Get in touch with Luke at Arrowhead and have him push a couple of bullets down a barrel...he'll be able to tell if it will shoot without sizing or not.....you might have to knurl up for a better fit but its an easy way to go sabotless...check into it...45omega seems to have had the most consistent accuracy with the Mcgowen and out of the box bullets....Good luck with it..... I finished the first Smokeless Muzzleloader project. Started out with Parker 275s with 68.grains H-4198 and lubricated wonder wads. The rifle kicked like a mule and the customer asked for me to put a muzzle brake on it. I was using a Knight breech plug and Lapua 308 brass cut off .610" with Federal 215 GM primers. After getting it sighted in shooting 1 moa at 100 yds. After about 50 rounds I noticed smoke coming out of the breech. I removed the breech plug to find it had a crack in it. I replaced it and went back to shooting. I switched to Parker 327s and found a load of 60.5 grains of H-4198 and Wolf LRP gave me much better groups sub .5"moa at 2675 fps. Put a Nightforce 5.5 x 22 X 60 scope on it. Doing some calculations and will shoot at ranges out to 500 yards next. Nat Lambeth

The customer and I have shot this rifle over 300 times. Eventually the breech plug fouled until it would not fire. I took the breech plug out and thoroughly cleaned and inspected it. It was greased up and reinserted. The gun went back to shooting. We had some issues with bullets I sized and did not clean the lube off completely. All bullets are now degreased after sizing. Last time customer shot the rifle he shot 2" group at 200 yds off the hood of his truck. The deer that have been taken acted like they were hit by a train. Nat Lambeth

I have now fired close to 400 rounds in this rifle. I have replaced two breech plugs, one due to a crack, and the second due to plasma erosion (not bad just preventative)along the front edge. The nipple has been cleaned out with .042" drill bit twice. I was shooting 327gr Parker Match hunters sized to .450" they were sometime difficult to load. I have since begun sizing them to .4495". They load easier and I shot two hundred yard groups with 68.0 Grains of IMR4198 and Federal 215gmm primers. Achieved sub.5moa 100 yard target. 200 yard target was sub 1.moa Running just over 2800fps. May experiment with some Barnes bullets made for the .460 S&W. Nat Lambeth
