I shot this 11pt on the first day of shotgun season.
This year was not a very good one for seeing lots of deer. I had 5 trail cameras out this year and never had a pic of this deer or any bucks that were worth shooting.
I had to work the night before so I took off 2 hours early. I took all my stuff to work with me so I could drive strait there to hunt. With no pics of any good sized bucks I decided to hunt a hay field that I had been seeing the does cross in just to get some meat.
No stands in this hayfield I just sit on the ground or stand up. I had just finished clearing out my spot by a tree so I could watch the hay field and a bean field when the shooting started all around me. I just happened to look down the right side of the hayfield and here he come. His head held high and looked like he was all puffed out and prancing down the field. I stood there in awe just watching him get closer and closer. At about 200yds he turned away and bolted off like something scared him. I got out my Knight and Hale pack rack and used it. This guy came back to me and stood at 180yds quartering to me. I had a clear shot at his right side. Got set up and used the tree as a rest and was hoping to get him closer but it looked as tho he was going to turn and leave so I aimed just a little high on the shoulder and shot. All I saw was all 4 legs leave the ground and him take off. I gave it about 20 min before going after him. I got to the spot that I thought he was standing when I shot and no blood. In the back of my mind I thought that I had missed or worse. I then started off the way he went and I looked up and about 40 yds away all I saw were horns sticking up out of the grass. ;D I got to him and sat down to look at him and enjoy him before having him mounted.
I was using the 220F with the 3" federal premium barnes tipped expander and a nikon pro staff scope.
Now I have an 11pt with one droptine and a 14pt with 2 droptines
;D
