There are a lot of ways to drill and thread a ramrod. I Think this works as easy as it gets to good result. I'm doing a ramrod for a buddy so I took some pictures on how to make a jig. First go to Home Biggy, a good auto parts store or Sears hardware and get a 48" aluminum rod. (This one cost $6.00 and will make 2 rods.) Also look for a #10-32 Tap and drill set. They will be packaged like below. Find a piece of square stock or round stock 3/4" or more in diameter at least an inch long. With a drill press , bore a 3/8" hole half way through the stock. Then take the bit that come with the tap and finish boring the rest of the way through. The bevel from the 3/8" boring will center the smaller bit automatically, so let it find its own center. It should look like this: Slip jig over the squared end of the rod and drill with the bit that came with the tap. Drill about a half inch and run the tap. Squaring the end can be done by spinning the rod with a drill and working the end with a mill bastard and finish with sand paper. Two rods for around ten bucks. What a deal! mshm

thanks for taking the time for adding photos. Nice clear discription, I went downstairs and it only took a few minutes to make the jig. I will get the rod tomorrow and finish it up.

I saw that post and as I was making a rod for a buddy ,it was just a matter of taking the pics. I also thought it would be better as a new thread so it would be easier to find down the road. As you are aware, many of us are senile ,or are rapidly headed in that direction. How to do it just seems like common sense. Thanks for the feed back. Hope many find it useful. I've learned much on this board. We share . That is what it's about.
