Friend of mine has a 700ml. Is it possible to convert this to a smokeless 45, if so what all would it entail? Can the bolt setup be changed the current set up is not impressive to say the least Thanks for any info.

Hi. There are several folks here that have converted 700ml's and if you search back through the posts, you will probably find some details on their conversions. I recently posted about my 700ml conversion - I think you will find it on page 2 of the posts. Anyway, you need to convert the bolt from the original slam fire to some kind of firing pin arrangement.. Probably you will want to also add a primer or shell holder. I chose to lengthen the bolt to use a standard 700 short action firing pin and added a primer holder like the 700ml. Other people have done it a little differently. You then need to install a smokless grade barrel (Pac nor or other) and have it threaded for a breach plug. You also need a breach plug - I chose to use a shortened savage plug.

Rangeball, I saw a post by someone (I think Kerry B?) stating that they had talked to someone at Remington and that the barrel material was the same for the 700ml as the regular Rem 700. So, I guess that you could potentially use the stock barrel and then, the breach plug and firing system would be the only areas needing attention as you said. It would be up to the individual building the gun to decide whether the to use the stock barrel. I just didnt want to endorse it as being safe as I dont have any personal knowledge of the metallurgy or heat treatment of 700ml barrels. I chose to use a new Pacnor barrel on my conversion.

Long ago Doug decided that the "line in the sand" revolved around whether the manufacturer approved smokeless in their rifles! Some may use the 700ML for smokeless but take those discussions to emails or PM's. Until Remington approves smokeless we won't question their thinking The barrels may very well be barrel steel, but the heat treatment or barrel thickness may not be appropriate for 40 or 50 or 60 Kpsi and we don't want anyone to think that they are safe. You are free to ask someone to PM you concerning Remington loads, but please don't post them in the open or they will be deleted. edge.

Learn something new every day I should add that the stuff I've read concerning using the OEM barrel was with a modified, longer breech plug out of good steel with more threads added to the barrel to accept it.

Even though the barrel on a Remington 700ML may be made from gun quality steel, i wouldn't feel comfortable and certainly wouldn't recommend using it for smokeless. I fully intend to convert my 700ML to a smokeless model, but i can assure you that it will have a Shilen or Pacnor barrel that has already been proven safe for smokeless muzzleloading. Barrels aren't so expensive that you should risk life or limb by using a barrel of unproven strength. Anybody need an unfired .50 take-off barrel from a Remington 700ML? ;D

KerryB, What is the barrel length? Blue or SS?
