Sunny, 80 to 86* in the shade. Wind did not pick up until 10:00 or so. I was set up to shoot by 8:00. Herman and Bill were there at 6:00
I got a new Pact chrono and was anxious to try it out before building a self contained box to house it in and also be able to set right on my tripod.....This week! As Herman mentioned, I taped some pieces of plywood in front of the start and stop stanchions. In setting it up, I got it backwards and Herman caught it right away ;D. I was surprised when the Pact came with only an 18" spacing between photo cells??? My old one is two feet. The further apart, the more precise the readings. I may call Pact???. Due to the angle of the sun and not getting the height right and having to make side shades, I lost a lot of shots. The ones I did get I feel were genuine based on old reading with my other unit.
The main thrust of my shooting today was with the same duplex charge. (Targets one thru five) I did use some different bullets but all 200 gr. Some saboted and some sabotless.
The duplex load is 13 gr. of N-110 under 57 gr. of N-130. If you want speed from these .45's, 110 or 5744 under N-130 is the ticket! 2015 is too slow. H-322 is better, but N-130 the best (so far)
Target #1 if you take out the first shot thru a clean barrel is just "OK"
Now Target #2 is what I'm beginning to like! Only problem, it don't shoot worth a hoot at 300 yards I had tried this on another occasion and found the same results. RB agreed its a good 100 yard bullet but not at 300. If you look at the target, you will see a lone bullet hole at 5:00 on the center 300 yard bull. That shot was fired at the top left bull with the second stadia line. That one shot convinced me to give up on it.
Target four with the 200 FTX was again, just OK with the first three in 4.5". There was some air movement beginning and while vertical was acceptable, the horizontal was not too good.
Now target five is where it got interesting. Shots #1 and #2 at under 1.5" was looking pretty good. This at 2886 fps. I was again, using the second stadia line on my 6.5 x 20 Leupold with Varmint Hunter reticle. Shot #3 move horizontally to the left for a 3.6" group. Shot #4 however, went about three feet low and to the right hitting the dirt Blown sabot! I was moving too quickly and did not allow sufficient time with the cool Rod in the barrel. Re-loaded and shot #4 again , Longer cool time, shot #5 went into the four shot cluster. Shot #6 disappeared (blown sabot) Waited longer and re-fired #6 which also went into the four shot cluster. #7 was the worst of the bunch.
I am considering getting an hour glass 1 minute egg timer to give me a consistent length of cool time. This load is obviously sensitive when doing almost 2900 fps in 85* weather.
So................If you are blowing sabots (blue Harvesters) at 2700 fps (Dave W) your barrel is not cool enough. Hence the advantage of the cool rod bring the temperatures down below ambient. Again, this is just my opinion from shooting in summer time temperatures and using the cool rod. My options are: leave the rod in longer than usual and/or, tone the load down
Load #6 was too anemic and showed no potential - only tow shots!
The 300 Scorpion sabotless appeared to be doing great until the third shot and then the fourth.
Of particular note was the decrease in velocity between the 200 gr. SST with sabot and the 200 gr. XTP sabotless. I have found all sabotless loads (using the same charge) will always show much less velocity.
Of the sabotless loads at longer range, the 200 FTX seems to be one of the better ones. Still, a lot more combinations to try.
