Just kidding RB. ;D Hope it stops so you can get in some shooting!
Speaking about shooting, Herman, our friend Bill and my self spent a somewhat "soggy" day at the range ourselves. Kind of drizzly with a couple of cloud bursts; it did not effect the accuracy by got my scope and spotting scope lens wet! At that point I moved my equipment from the outside benches to the indoor portion. Slight head wind, though not bad and 59* temperatures.
My intention was to try out the 56 gr. H-4198 load with 200 gr. XTP's and various sabots. Part way into the session, I mistakenly used some 195 gr. Barnes MZ's (don't ask----I had put them in a small plastic bottle. I had also put some modified XTP's in another bottle in my loading area. I had not intended to shoot ANY Barnes yesterday.Period -see report)
On the first group, I wanted to revisit the load that shot well last week. I believe shot #1 from a clean barrel explained the flyer with four still in 1.5"
Next I wanted to see what the 200 gr. Renier's would do with the same load combination. Just so-so with the fifth an unexplained flyer
The next (third) group was where I goofed and used the Barnes. I also substituted the Blue Crush. POI shifted but still managed 5 in 1.9"
In group four I tried just dry patching instead of my regular "minor" cleaning regiment!" Nothing to brag about but still better than the .50
In group five I substituted the tan mmp sabot and dry patched. After two shots I gave up!
Group six was back to the same combo as group #1. At this point, I had 8 vials of 56 gr. H-4198 left. I started out going to shoot a five shot group but after shots 2, 4 and 5 printed pretty close together I figured......what the heck and fired the last three. As you can see shots 2, 6,7 and 8 formed one tiny little cluster that measured .4" CTC. With shots 4 and 5 added it was still right at one inch! The entire eight shot group was 1.79"
Group seven was shot with 70 gr. of AA-2015 and produced a big flame according to Bill. Accuracy not so good. Will try reducing that load by five grains and see what happens.
The last group was shot with 60 gr. of Re-7 Not too bad! The only problem here was I did not get any chrono readings. My screen would light up and say "fire", but no readings. Upon packing up, I found that one of the plugs had partially pulled out of the unit. If I would guess at the velocity, I suspect it was about 2500 fps based on the felt recoil as compared to the 56 gr. 4198 loadings. This powder looks like it need more testing in various weights.
All in all, I am pleased with the progress and know I have two decent loads that seem repeatable....at least the 4198 load. So many more combinations to try. I think the I am going to be limited on some of the slower powders due to my "short" barrel As long as I get the accuracy, I think I can live with the lower velocities. Duplexing may be the answer.
The targets I am using are official IBS 200 yd. score targets with a 1" ten ring. I added the orange dot.
Note: The targets ARE mounted sideways for a better fit on my board.
